Dr. Wright’s Prescription for 2020

  1. Homelessness –Allowing people to live on the streets is inhumane. The street should not be an option for those struggling with mental illness and addiction. With public-private partnerships, the use of facilities like the vacant LA County Hospital can provide immediate remedy and triage. For long-term rehabilitation and for some a permanent home, let’s use large facilities such as abandoned military bases. Here, needed services will be provided including vocational training, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, and psychiatric treatment. Once there is a place for Homeless to go, then the Court allows enforcement of vagrancy laws. Enforcement of vagrancy laws is important. Property owners and renters have rights- shelters and rehabilitation facilities do not have to be in your backyard.
  2. Immigration – Open borders will not work so it is important to secure our borders, reduce crime, and prevent exploitation of migrants. For non-citizens already here, if they are law-abiding and self-sufficient, let’s offer residency status and the option to get in the back of the line to apply for citizenship.
  3. Education – Provide choice and excellence in education which allows parents access to Magnet, Charter and other schools known for excellence, and the option to homeschool. Let’s give our parents’ choice with school vouchers.
  4. Sanctuary State – For the safety and well-being of all we should abolish sanctuary cities and states as they allow illegal immigrants convicted of crimes (even violent crimes) to be released from jails into our local communities. We are all for immigration but it is important to deport those who come here and commit crimes.
  5. Health Care – All citizens should have access to quality, affordable health care. The best time-honored systems include a combination of private and government healthcare. Existing Medi-Cal/Medicaid, Medicare and our LA County clinics and hospitals help assure access to care for all but must be improved. It is also important to keep our private healthcare system as this is where innovation occurs and gives us the highest quality healthcare in the world. At first glance “Medicare for All” sounds good but is government-controlled socialized medicine- no private alternative. It will break the bank and compromise care. You won’t be able to choose your doctor, get a second opinion, and decisions are made by government. Let’s not give up our freedom to choose.
  6. Taxes – Support tax reform that provides for social services, infrastructure improvements and public safety while reducing the tax burden to spur growth, job creation, and allow people to keep more of what they earn.
  7. Election Integrity – Ethical government and responsible stewardship is needed to assure the will of the people prevails and restore trust in the electoral system. Our Founders said one person one vote. California is the only state that allows ballot harvesting that permits an individual to deliver multiple, even thousands, of ballots. Repeal our corrupt ballot harvesting law.
  8. Inner City Revitalization – Let’s truly help our inner cities by giving a hand up, not just a handout. We need to provide community security, education with vocational training, and job opportunity to stem the tide of violence and poverty.
  9. Environment – Critical to support environmental laws that protect our environment yet do not place undue burden on working families, older people, farmers, home/landowners.
  10. Veterans – The current state of VA hospitals and clinics is unacceptable. It is our responsibility to take care of our veterans who suffer from psychological and physical injuries as a result of their service. Housing and rehabilitation of our homeless vets should be our priority. Let’s get our veterans off the streets by fully utilizing the huge West Los Angeles Home for Veterans now almost empty which was deeded in the 1800’s as a home for Veterans.
